At a pivotal moment, on his last evening on earth with his disciples, Jesus says, "And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (John 13:34)

"As I have loved you" is a pretty high standard. It's far from easy to love with the gentleness, insight, and transformative courage that Jesus does. Indeed, it is nearly impossible.

Yet, as daunting as it is, I am deeply inspired and oriented by this spiritual challenge. Every day is a new opportunity to grow in loving as Jesus loved--in these present circumstances, grappling with systemic social injustices, and relying on the Holy Spirit as a faithful companion and guide.

Here in the loving Spirit of God, we are never alone.
