Out in the Wind

Late in the afternoon, with morning’s rain long over, I go out to walk in fields of tall grass under a vast and luminous blue sky. I turn my head and the soft wind begins to sound like ocean waves rolling in to shore.

“The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going.” Jesus said this to Nicodemus, who was at first afraid to change.

Now the wind sweeps over the grass and slips through my fingers. On the palms of my hands I feel how temporary life is. And I know, more calmly than ever, that we are here to love with our whole hearts.

We cannot tell ahead of time where a heart full of love will take us. We cannot imagine, before we get there, what astonishing things we can do when love opens the door.
