Seeing Through

Up early, I watched the light arrive.
Gradually a tree
with half its leaves
lit up orange
and I could see through
to the green beyond.

We are already
part of all this,
my heart said.

We come from the elements
and return to the elements
and belong to the elements,
and in this way we are always at home.

If we were less afraid of earth,
would we be less afraid of death?

If we were less afraid of death,
would we be more in love with earth?

Could we dwell together
in earthiness and thankfulness?

Might we sing together
and dance together
and shout together our beatitudes?
