Thank You, Chip the Monk

Right now, Chip the Monk is sitting tall on the doorstep of his main entrance, basking in the sun. And meditating. Chip does this so often and so beautifully that one day early in the summer, one of us called him by that name, and he became one of our meditation mentors.

Chip is good at meditating. He is focused, yet relaxed. He lets the sun warm his back. He has stamina. He is faithful to his practice. He gazes at the trees. He exudes peacefulness and joy.

Then one day, down in his earthen home, he had babies. We had no clue until the night he brought them out into the soft light just before sunset. The monklets ran, jumped, chased, and wrestled in the grass. We had to count carefully. There were five babies.

And so perhaps Chip is not a "he" after all. Who knows? Chip is a great non-binary name. And it is one of the sounds they make, when they are not meditating.
