In a Beginning

To begin anew is to stand in a moment between the familiar and the unknown. You can turn back. Or not. You can step hesitantly, and there is often good reason for this. Or you can go all in. You can show up, let your heart be moved, and start to shine. Such light is beautiful and vulnerable and drenched with blessing.

“In a beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was without form, and void, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while the Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good.”

Each day offers the opportunity of one beginning after another. In this way, God continually invites us to shine, to be present in our full glory, to bless the world with the abundance of divine light and love that is within us.

“In a beginning…”: I learned this translation of Genesis 1:1 from Dr. Johanna W. H. Bos, the Dora Pierce professor of Bible and professor of Old Testament at Louisville Seminary.
