Come On In

Walking after supper in Fremont, Ohio,
we saw a man replacing floorboards in the
entryway of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church.
We're admiring your stained glass windows, we said.
Come on in, he said, you can see them better in here.
Tom let us have our own walk around the sanctuary
while he kept working on the floor.

The evening light shone in through the windows:
Near the front, a farmer with a basket of apples
knelt at a stream in a window where Jesus shared bread.
Across the aisle, Jesus stood between a woman
and those who accused her. Jesus said,
"Let one who has not sinned cast the first stone."
On the back wall, Elizabeth and Mary ran to each other
over the low brown hills.

I stepped out, giving thanks
for the grace that happens
when we catch on to God's kindness.
Thank you, Tom, we said, shaking hands again at the door.
